EXPLANATORY NOTES

Geographical positions refer directly to the graduations of the largest scale Canadian Hydrographic chart unless otherwise indicated.

Bearings refer to the true compass and are measured clockwise from 000° (North) clockwise to 359°; those relating to lights are from seaward.

Visibility of lights is that in clear weather.

Depths - The units used for soundings (metres, fathoms or feet) are stated in the title of each chart.

Elevations are normally given above Higher High Water, Large Tides unless otherwise indicated.

Distances may be calculated as follows:

1 nautical mile = 1 852 metres (6,076.1 feet)

1 statute mile = 1 609.3 metres (5,280 feet)

1 metre = 3.28 feet

Temporary & Preliminary Notices are indicated by a (T) or a (P) before the chart action. Please note that Nautical charts are not hand amended by the Canadian Hydrographic Service for Temporary (T) and Preliminary (P) Notices. It is recommended that mariners chart these corrections in pencil. Listing of charts affected by Temporary and Preliminary Notices are revised and promulgated quarterly in Section 1 of the Monthly Edition .

Please note that, in addition to the temporary and preliminary changes normally advertised as (T) and (P) Notices, there are a few permanent changes to navigational aids that have been advertised as Preliminary Notices to Mariners while charts are being updated for new editions.

Marine Information Report & Suggestion Sheet - Mariners are requested to notify the responsible authorities when new or suspected dangers to navigation are discovered, changes observed in aids to navigation or corrections to publications are seen to be necessary. Such communications can be made using the Marine Information Report & Suggestion Sheet inserted on the last page of each monthly edition of Notices to Mariners.

Monthly edition of Notices to Mariners - Notices to Mariners are issued free of charge on a monthly basis. Mariners now have a choice between specific Regional issue(s) they wish to receive. Requests to be placed on or removed from the mailing list should be made by using the form inserted on page iii of each monthly edition. Notification of changes to the mailing addresses, regional issues and/or number of copies required should also be transmitted by means of this form.

Canadian Nautical Charts & Publications - A source list of Canadian Nautical Charts & publications is published in Notice No. 14 of the Notices to Mariners Annual Edition April 2008. The source supply and the prices effective at the time of printing are listed. For current chart edition dates refer to the following web site: http://www.chs-shc.gc.ca/pub/en/products/core.cfm

NOTE: Cette publication est aussi disponible en français.

CHART CORRECTIONS - SECTION 2

Corrections to nautical charts will be listed in numeric order by chart number. Each chart correction listed applies only to that particular chart. Related charts, if any, will have their own specific correction listed separately. Users should also refer to CHS Chart 1 Symbols, Abbreviations Terms for additional information pertaining to the correction of charts. The illustration below describes the elements that will comprise a typical Section 2 chart correction.

ADVISORY

NOTICES TO SHIPPING (WRITTEN AND BROADCAST)

The Canadian Coast Guard is implementing a number of changes to the aids to navigation system in Canada .

These changes are advertised as Notices to Shipping (Broadcast and Written) by the Canadian Coast Guard and are followed up with Notices to Mariners, then charts are updated by hand correction, reprints or new editions.

Mariners are advised that all relevant Written Notices to Shipping should be kept until superseded by Notices to Mariners or through revised charts issued by the Canadian Hydrographic Service.

Written Notices to Shipping are published weekly and are available from local Canadian Coast Guard Offices.

The Canadian Hydrographic Service is reviewing the impact of these changes with the Canadian Coast Guard and together we are preparing an action plan on the issuing of chart revisions.

For further information contact your local Regional Notices to Shipping (Notships) issuing authorities.

SECTION 1 – Edition 06/2009

SAFETY AND GENERAL INFORMATION

CANADIAN HYDROGRAPHIC SERVICE - ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING CANADIAN HYDROGRAPHIC SERVICE CHART PATCHES

CHS is introducing a new initiative with a full colour Patch on the Web. A link in the Notices to Mariners web site will be provided so clients can access the colour Patch. The colour Patch will be published in HTML and PDF format. Providing the Patches in colour (accessible to all via remote access to the Web) is an enhanced form of alternative service delivery in line with CHS strategic objectives.

Colour Web Patches are free to the mariner, and given the quality of many printers, should reproduce well. They will be available in real time all around the world which is an improvement since clients had to wait for the paper copy to be mailed.

Previously, in the Notices to Mariners (NTM) booklet, Patches were produced in full colour or a minimum of black and magenta.

Due to current budgetary constraints, Patches will now only be produced in black and white for publication in the NTM booklet.

Our level of service will change with this initiative and CHS intends to analyze market reaction to this innovation.

CHS welcomes your feedback on this new service at chsinfo@dfo-mpo.gc.ca

CANADIAN HYDROGRAPHIC SERVICE - CUMULATIVE CHART CORRECTIONS

CANADIAN HYDROGRAPHIC SERVICE - PRINT ON DEMAND CHARTS - CARE AND USE

Background

By providing nautical charts to the public, the goal of the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) is to provide services for safe navigation in a fiscally responsible manner. As a result, CHS continues to expand its portfolio of nautical paper charts that are printed using Print On Demand (POD) technology. These charts are easily recognized by their whiter paper and the coloured logo of the Canadian Hydrographic Service. This new technology enables CHS to print charts in a more efficient manner while enhancing chart content through being able to quickly add new and important information. POD technology provides customers with up-to-date charts without the historical hand-drawn corrections or glued-on patches. Additionally, this technology eliminates out-of-stock situations which arise with the traditional printing and warehousing methods. In the event of a national emergency, CHS can respond to the appropriate authorities with best available information very quickly.

Care of Your POD Chart

CHS encourages its customers to handle the POD charts more carefully than the traditional lithographic charts. When plotting information on POD charts, use HB pencils and apply limited pressure. Testing has suggested that an Indian gum eraser is more effective than alternatives when used on the product. This eraser is also suitable for charts printed using lithographic processes.

These facilities should be respected like any other marine wildlife fisheries with their fishing gear in operation. Licensed marine farms are marked on the water by yellow cautionary buoys and at times with a number of black floats located between the buoys. The shipping channels near the marine farms are marked with a lateral system of buoyage (red and green buoys). These buoys may be lighted or unlighted. Marine farms are identified with a symbol on charts; according to the chart scale, the perimeter may or may not be shown with the main buoys marking the maximum covered area by the aquaculture facilities.
(C2009-043.1)

Chapter 1 - After paragraph 235
Insert: 235.1 Aquaculture is the raising of animals and plants in salt or fresh water. Marine farming is a relatively new and rapidly expanding industry along the Atlantic coastline. Due to many changes in this industry revised positions (latitude and longitude) are not accurately known for all facilities. Only a certain number of these changes are advertised in Notices to Mariners and Notices to Shipping. Maintain a safe distance from marine farm facilities to avoid creating damage from excessive wash and to avoid collisions and entanglement. See diagram of Typical Aquaculture Site Layouts surface marine farm facilities.
235.2 Some fish are raised in open water marine farms. A typical marine farm consists of floating walkways from which net pens are hung in the water 6 m or more deep. A large work and storage area is usually on the adjacent shore. Some farms use large barges containing work, storage and living areas. Sometime they are moored close offshore along shipping channels or are moored in bays and inlets used by commercial and recreational vessels for anchorages. In some of the shallower, less frequented bays and inlets farms may be moored in the centre of the fairway.

ATL 100 - General Information, Atlantic Coast, Second Edition, 2007 -

235.3 There are other types of farms established in many locations along the coast. Shellfish tenures use off-bottom culture for these shoreline marine farms. Off-bottom culture methods use floating platforms from which the shellfish are suspended. The floating platforms are a series of buoys linked by cables which are left in one position for a few years; the shellfish are then harvested. Depending on the season, these facilities are located at the surface or submerged. In some coastal areas of Chaleur Bay, Baie de Gaspé, Îles de la Madeleine and Prince Edward Island, there are large numbers of these facilities.
checker box 235.4 Caution. - Frequent aquaculture site changes require mariners to proceed with caution. Some areas previously occupied by marine farms may be encumbered with submerged debris from abandoned facilities. Avoid anchoring in such areas.

CORRECTIONS - At the end of the booklet
Insert: Canaport LNG
1 Canaport LNG has been constructed at a location 0.7 mile NE of the Canaport Deep Water Oil Terminal, at Mispec Point. Canaport LNG is the first Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) receiving and regassification terminal in Canada. The facility has the capacity to distribute 28 million cubic metres of natural gas per day to customers in Canada and the United States.
2 Three large concrete LNG storage tanks are located close NE of the Irving Oil storage tanks in this vicinity. A flame tower is located on the shoreline adjacent to the easternmost tank.
3 Pilotage for vessels proceeding to Canaport LNG is compulsory. The pilot boarding station for vessels bound for Canaport LNG is in position 45°09'03"N, 66°04'50"W. For vessels departing Canaport LNG, the pilot will disembark the vessel in position 45°10'48"N, 66°03'42"W, which is the same pilot boarding station for vessels entering Saint John Harbour.
4 A series of sector lights are located in the vicinity of Canaport LNG. These lights are privately maintained, and are in use only for the purpose of vessel transits to and from Canaport LNG. The lights operate as necessary. They are arranged to assist pilotage, such that turning points are reached at the intersections of any two sectors.
5 These lights are operated from Mispec Point, Connoly Head, and a location 0.6 mile NW of Cape Spencer.
6 The Canaport LNG jetty consists of the unloading platform, eight mooring dolphins, joined together by catwalks, and a trestle joining these to the shore.

ATL 106 - Gulf of Maine and Bay of Fundy, First Edition, 2001 -

7 The unloading platform is 65 m long at the face, with a depth of 29 m at the face. There are depths of 23.8 to 25.6 m in the vicinity of the mooring dolphins. The outer ends of the unloading platform and the two adjacent dolphins are in alignment, giving a berthing face 115 m long. Lights, privately maintained, are shown from towers located on the outer two dolphins, and the two dolphins adjacent to the unloading platform.
8 The entire length of the outer structure is 425 m.
9 The trestle is 300 m long, and supports a roadway and the pipeline to the shore.
10 Under certain weather conditions, vessels may be required to leave the jetty, and proceed to anchorage.
